Mausoleum was built by Artemisia, the sister and the wife of King Mausolos, B.C. 355. It was destroyed by an earthquake, but the Knights of St John used the Stones when they built Bodrum Castle so that some pieces can be seen in the castle walls, while other remnants are on display in museums. The enormous scale of this monument is evident from remains of the foundations of the original structure on-site at the Mausoleum Museum in Bodrum.
Ancient Theater of Halicarnassos
The next stop will be the Ancient Theater of Halicarnassos, dated back to the 4th century BC with 5.000 capacity. The theatre was the focal entertainment point for the people of Halicarnassus. The Ancient Theatre is an imposing structure situated to the North of the old city. The theatre incorporates all the characteristics of pre-Roman Empire theatres. Built by King Mausolus in the 4th century B.C., it sone of the oldest theatre in Anatolia.
